Best Rock Tumblers Grit 1

If there’s one key ingredient that brings out the best results in rock tumbling, it’s quality grit. Sure, you’ll need some nice rocks to start with, a robust tumbler, and a load of patience to boot, but the transformation only happens once the grit works its magic. Shaping, smoothing, and polishing your rocks into things of beauty.

Similar to sanding down wooden furniture, the grit in your tumbler provides an abrasive substance to remove imperfections, finesse the shape and bring out the natural patterns and colors that lie under the surface. Much like sandpaper, grit comes in varying abrasive consistencies that are to be utilized at different stages of the process. As a rule of thumb, follow this four-step process to achieve the best results:

  1. Initial shaping tumble, using a coarse silicon carbide grit (typically 60/90 grit)
  2. Secondary smoothing tumble using a medium silicon carbide grit (typically 150/220 grit)
  3. Third, a pre-polish tumble using a fine silicon carbide grit (typically 500 grit)
  4. Finally, it’s time to polish the rocks. Most commonly with Aluminum oxide (also, tin, chrome, and cerium oxides, depending on your rocks)

To help you find the perfect grit for your tumbler, we’ve put nine options together with complete four-stage sets or individual bulk-buy grits to choose from. By drawing on rockhounding expertise and analyzing product reviews through Fakespot, each of the grits comes recommended by the genuine people that use them.

1. Polly Plastics Rock Tumbler Tumbling Media Grit Kit & Plastic Filler Pellets

Polly Plastics Rock Tumbler Tumbling Media Grit Kit & Plastic Filler Pellets

A complete, four-step grit package that includes a plastic filler, the Polly Plastics kit includes all you need to uncover the shining potential of your gemstones. You can use this kit in a fifteen-pound tumbler or five times in a three-pound tumbler. It contains a pound of 60/90 coarse silicon carbide grit, a pound of 180/220 silicon carbide grit, a half-pound of five hundred fine silicon carbide, a half-pound of 1200 aluminum oxide polish, and one pound of premium high-impact polypropylene plastic filler pellets. This material is compatible with any tumbler.

The purpose of the plastic filler is to protect and cushion fragile stones during tumbling. It resembles little ball bearings allowing your stones to tumble smoothly. This process improves the polishing and grinding as it tumbles in the rotating barrel. It also prevents the tumbler from ‘bruising’ the stones.

It comes in a five-bottle set that contains the four types of grit and the filler. The idea is to use them across different stages in the tumbling process, resulting in smoothly polished stones. The design of each grit does a particular job, so by combining them in the appropriate steps they produce the best results.

You start by using the coarse grit, which removes the majority of the roughness. In the next step, you used the medium grit to continue the process of smoothing the rocks out further. In the third step, you use the pre-polish which smoothes stones out further, preparing them for polishing. The last step is the final polish that smooths the stones out some more, giving them the shine you are looking for.

What we love:

  • This kit comes with simple instructions, making it easy to get reliable results right from the start
  • Arrives with four distinct types of grit, no extra material is required
  • This product is beginner-friendly so you can get started quickly even without experience in tumbling rocks

We don’t like this as much:

  • Because the filler is plastic it needs to be washed after every use, so as to clean away bits of rock that stick to it

Frequently Asked Questions

How much grit do I use in a rock tumbler?

The amount of grit that you add to your rock tumbler ultimately depends upon how much rock you are going to be tumbling, as well as the barrel size of your rock tumbler.

When you buy a rock tumbler, it will have a chart to show you exactly how much grit you will need to use during each phase of the tumbling process. If you do not have a chart handy, the rule of thumb is that you use two to two and a half tablespoons of grit for every pound of rock that you are tumbling.

Can I reuse grit from a rock tumbler?

While it is understandable that you will want to reuse your rock tumbling grit as many times as possible, the grit used in the first three stages is not meant for reuse.

You cannot reuse it in the same tumbling step because the grit will gradually break down during the tumbling process. However, you can use the slurry that your tumbler created in the previous stage, to help the grinding action during the second and third stages.

During the polish stage, you should not have any slurry or grit from the other stages in your rock tumbler barrel. Before moving on to the final polishing stage you should thoroughly wash your rocks and barrel before adding the polishing grit. If you do not take this step your final polishing results will not be as good as they should be. Unlike the other types of grit, you can reuse the polish grit several times. However, you will eventually have to change it.

Wrap Up

Rock tumbler grit is an essential medium for any rock tumbling enthusiast, ensuring that you get the perfect polish every time. So, if you are interested in rock tumbling, you are going to need to periodically refill your grit supply.

The type of refill kit that you get will depend upon how much rock tumbling you do and how serious you are about it. It also depends upon whether you are a beginner or experienced with the process. Regardless of your rock tumbling experience and the size of your rock tumbler, you are sure to be able to find just the right grit refill package to fit your needs.
