Best Soil Samplers 1

Soil samplers are a key tool for anyone looking to find out more about the soil beneath them.

Geologists use them to understand the rock formation underneath the soil and get an understanding of the geology of a certain section of land.

They are also super useful for those looking to mine for gold or other precious metals – all they require is a little weight and effort and you get a clear understanding of the soil beneath you.

Even gardeners can use soil samplers to understand more about the soil composition so they try to understand why certain plants or even lawns are failing to grow.

A super simple took but has a ton of practical uses from mining to gardening.

In order to remove the guesswork and give yourself the most accurate picture of your soil composition, we’ve put together our top 10 recommended soil samplers. By looking into auger quality and probe features as well as ease of use and varying budgets we were able to include a range of samplers to suit all.

When compiling our list, we analyzed product reviews through Fakespot to ensure genuine users are happy with the products we recommend and they are up to the task at hand.

7. Rittenhouse Soil Sampler Probe

Rittenhouse Soil Sampler Probe

This 20-inch soil probe from Rittenhouse is a favorite with landscapers. It is a breeze to take numerous core samples to evaluate the composition of the soil. The results can tell you when to aerate or fertilize your lawn. Unlike other core samplers with a T-handle, this probe is welded around the handle to where the shaft joins. It easily inserts into the soil and the core comes out with a gentle nudge.

The heavy stainless steel construction means you can expect to get results from this sampler probe and it will last a lifetime. Even if your soil is mostly clay, you can put pressure on the probe and with a bit of effort, it will get down to the required depth and give you core samples without bending. This core sampler is well worth a look.

Core Diameter: 3/4”

“T” Handle: YES

What we love:

  • The beveled end tip makes for easy soil insertion

8. Varomorus Soil Sampler Probe 36″

Varomorus Soil Sampler Probe 36' Stainless Steel Tubular T-Style Handle with Footsteps.

This professional lawn soil sampler probe from Varomorus is an impressive 36 inches long, perfect for fields, gardens, and lawn maintenance, boasting 12-inch core samples. Being 36 inches long, it has the added feature of foot-step bars for extra pushing power. Having a double foot-step bar means you can use either foot to push it far into the soil, up to 12 inches.

Having the foot-step, you may be tempted to just “push” straight down, but this probe is easier to use if you “push down”, give a little twist, then continue pushing. This makes for easier insertion in the soil, even for hard clay areas. Extracting the soil sample is just a matter of turning the probe upside down. Made from durable stainless steel with a solid welded T-handle, this will not disappoint the avid gardener or lawn enthusiast.

10. LaMotte 1055 Model EP Soil Sampling Tube

LaMotte 1055 Model EP Soil Sampling Tube

This soil sampling tube from LaMotte is a robust galvanized tube with a square-shaped T-handle. It measures 12 inches long with a 1-inch core diameter. The tube has a “saw-tooth” tip to make soil penetration easier. The core sample cut out is 1-inch from the tip, and is 9.75 inches long, making sample extraction a simple procedure.

Because the sampling tube is made from thick galvanized steel, you can exert a lot of pressure when taking samples. It is even possible to use a mallet to drive it into hard-packed soil or clay without any damage. This is a very good-sized hand soil sampler and well worth looking at.

Material: Galvanized Steel

Weight: 1 pound

Core sample area: 9.75”

Core Diameter: 1”

“T” Handle: YES

What we love:

  • The “saw-tooth” tip is great for cutting into harder soil

FAQs about Soil Samplers.

Why should you test your soil?

Routine soil tests can help with the maintenance of your growing plants, trees, and lawn. It is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to check the levels of elements in the soil.

Homeowners test the soil from their lawns to get an indication of the pH level. The amount of pH in the soil shows the acidity levels which if too high can be detrimental to growth. A soil sample test can yield results including:

  • pH soil levels
  • How much nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, sulfur, and magnesium is present
  • Percentage of organic matter
  • If lead is present in the soil (Home gardens especially are tested for lead)
  • Whether fertilizer needs to be added
  • Other informational tips for healthy plant or lawn growth

What are soil sampling tubes?

A soil sampling tube, also known as a soil sampler probe, is used to examine the soil beneath your plants or lawn. Generally, a soil sampling tube is metal, (stainless, or galvanized steel) tube with a sharpened end and a T-handle. The tube is inserted into the ground and when it is pulled out, soil is lodged in the tube. This core sample can be seen in the slot on the side of the probe and can be removed to be sent for testing.

They are designed for three main functions:

  1. They let you see how much water penetration the soil is receiving, and in particular how wet or dry the soil is. When you water your lawn, for example, the surface gets saturated, slowly penetrating deeper into the soil. The more water, the deeper the penetration. Take a soil sample approximately an hour after watering to see how far into the soil the water has penetrated. It should be at or below the roots of the area you are testing.
  2. To take core samples for lab testing, normally from the surface to 6 to 12 inches deep.
  3. Obtain a soil profile. Find out what the sub-soil looks like if your top-soil is deep enough for adequate plant growth, and whether you have a drainage problem.

Which Soil Sampler is Best for You?

For homeowners, depending on the type of garden you have, all lawn, flower beds, vegetable areas, or a combination of lawn and flowers, you should choose a soil sampler that does the job, no matter which area you take samples from. If you are mainly concerned about the state of your lawn, then a smaller probe length would be your best choice. A small, hand-held, and lightweight probe that you can store easily, but take numerous samples to find out what problems if any, your lawn has.
