Bougainville crushing plant was a bottleneck and major improvement opportunity. Malcolm Lees presentation reviews the work done to improve overall operational efficiency in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9n4Po4nIRs

It includes:

  • Bougainville crushing operations summary
  • Background
  • Why? - Economics
  • Maximising KWH
  • Increasing utilization
  • Improving crusher maintenance
    • Example - large jobs
    • Example - small frequent jobs
    • Secondary screen maintenance
  • Maximizing the KWH secondary crushers
  • Preparing for expansion
  • Workforce
  • Beyond work

The presentation is worth viewing and reflecting on. Most of the discussion would be relevant to any crushing plant today.

What do you think re ideas for use and approaches you may have used?

According to this presentation, the main objective was to maximize the power consumption, in other words try to improve the kwh per tonne milled. In order to achieve the results,

Some key points are listed below,

- The operating style was improved changing the habitual way to operate the plant

- Crushing and milling utilization were 82% and 92%, respectively. The factors were higher than the engineering design. The crushing operation was better, apparently, there was more kWh available, but the feed was much finer.

- It was necessary to consider a good strategy to treat the crushed material in the right time.

- Also, the maintenance was planned to have the equipment in good operating conditions
