Hi.

I want to know the design considerations for a High Rate Thickener that will be used to separate platinum solids from used mining water which forms a slurry with an inlet slurry velocity of 75 [l/s] and a solids percentage of 0.5 [%]. The density of the solids in the slurry is 3020 [kg/m^3] and there will be assumed that the underflow contains a solids percentage of between 20 - 40 [%].

Any assistance on the matter will be appreciated.

Regards

Christiaan

Just doesn't sound like a high capacity thickener application. Flow is low and solids density is very low. My guess is that this would be a 10 - 20 ft thickener. High cap thickeners are all about flocculation and achieving an optimum feed well density, a bit challenging at your solids solids level. Plate thickener could probably do this but density would be 3-5% solids.

If it were my project I would probably lean towards either a filter press or centrifuge.

Hi Christiaan,

The typical course of action would be to have dynamic thickening test work done to determine the thickener sizing parameters of your specific slurry. A thickener sizing exercise is then conducted using the sizing parameters determined from the test work and applied to the process specifications as you indicate above. We have a laboratory in Kyalami, Johannesburg where we carry out these tests. It can also be conducted on site if necessary.

If it is a greenfields application and no slurry material is available for test work, we could still assist you in an estimated thickener size based on sizing parameters from our database of test work on platinum materials.

Please feel free to contact us if you would like to have further discussions.
