Press filter feeding (3 replies and 5 comments)

Hello every body.

In our plant we have orion pump for feeding our press filter. Their pressure rate in the feeding cycle is constant absolutely. They have only soft start have not variable speed drive to change feed pressure at feeding cycle. And we must repair our feed pumps every week because of slurry leakage. Does any person Know how can we decrease failure of our feed pumps? Working with constant pressure at feeding cycle has effect on the failure of our feed pumps or on filter efficiency?

I need help. Thankyou

Hello Hamid, check the capacity of your pump, it is adequate for the filter size.

Hamid, not sure what Orion pump is. Is it a Metso horizontal centrifugal or some type of positive displacement vane pump. I am assuming that it is centrifugal. Nothing is constant. Initially pressure will be low and pump will run out on its hydraulic curve. As cake builds pressure will rise and flow will drop. You have two ways to wreck this pump , initial high flow at runout and then possibly allowing it to run too long at near zero flow at

shutoff pressure. If this is a PD pump the above is nonsense. Please clarify on pump type.

Thank you. Our pump is centrifugal Orion pump. My question is need we some equipment on our pump that can change the flowrate or pressure during the feeding cycle? Like variable speed drive? Totally the speed of pump must be changed during the feeding cycle? How can I decrease the leakage of our pump with some new equipment or some controlling rules?
Thank you

Hello Hamid,
Certainly, the filter feed pump has step speed settings during the formation of the cake which must have been tested and set during commissioning of the pump. If you don´t have a VSD for this I saw in other operation with multiple pumps a feed recirculation loop where pressure could be adjusted with a pressure control valve. By the other hand about the leakage of your pump, the gland seal is critical. I assume that you have gland water for your pump with an adequate pressure. If so, in order not to dilute your slurry an open/close system will be adopted essentially with a sollenoid controlled valve opening it a few seconds previously to start of the pump and closing it when the pump stops.

Thank you for your help.
I want to decrease leakage so do you have any pdf file or another manual that explains this method? About designing or equipment?
I need help.

As people note, the pump should be designed for the application.  A constant flow PD pump for example is probable the worst type for a filter press.   Depending on the filter press size a flows the pump should typically supply feed at a higher flow rate initially and not at a high pressure, then ramp up.  The pump should supply according to the filter cake resistance and what the cake filtration rate is.  With the existing feed pump, what does the pressure profile with time look like?

Most big filter presses will use centrifugal pumps with a VFD drive ideally for control.

There is also a wear consideration - from a filtration view the filter make be able take very high flow rates, be careful as slurry related errosion becomes (more) an issue, and filter cloth selection becomes a bigger consideration.
