Disposal of Spent Activated Carbon: How can I safely dispose spent carbon which has long been used in the elution process and how can I verify if the carbon contains any residual gold?

All elution processes are not ideal i.e. 100% efficient, which means there will residual gold on the fine spent carbon, so there is no need to verify that. However, you can assay the spent carbon for the amount of residual gold left on the spent carbon. As for the disposal method, the fire destruction method is the best way to use since you will be able to recover the residual gold on the spent carbon. A small added note: Some tolling smelters which have a significant PGM content in their feed will accept spent carbon and pay for a portion of the gold to obtain the reductant value of the carbon. A conversation with the tolling agent may be advantageous to both parties.

In Canada, there are companies who will take the carbon for some percentage of the gold .
This service may be available in your area. All too often, operators think that there is a lot of residual gold left in their carbon, when in fact, there is very little if the elution has been done properly.
A thorough Sampling of the carbon and assay of the sample will tell you how much gold remains.
However, if you really think that there is considerable gold still in the carbon, you can BURN it yourself in a controlled furnace and collect the gold from the residue. This means you must have the process to recover the gold from the ash left after igniting the carbon.
Best to seek out a third party as suggested.

I think the best method is to burn the carbon and the ash from it can be smelted to get gold.

Thank you for your contributions. I guess i will have to assay the samples thorough. the previous metallurgist tried smelting the ash but did not get the gold.  I'm planning of leaching the ash using cyanide after assaying it.
