Flocculants are used to improve the settling of finely dispersed solids.  They do this by adhering a coating of one molecule to the surface of the particles to make them collect in groups called flocs which are heavy enough to settle.  The impact is a surface chemical one and does not impact the broad nature of the material being settled.

It does not change the basic nature of the material beyond the surface layer, and then only be adhering  material to this surface.
