Separation of Chromite From Magnetite (3 replies and 1 comment)

I have been closely following the flow-sheet development at the FPX Baptiste project.  Recently, they have successfully floated out a high grade nickel concentrate, leaving a decent magnetite by-product in the tail.  But I suspect that a few percent of chromite is still mixed in with the magnetite and I am wondering what  the chances are of floating this out into a separate product stream.  Looks to me like the specific gravities of chromite and magnetite are too close for gravity separation.  Flotation collector 3418A was used for the nickel fraction and the grind is 25 micron.  More can be found here:

I wonder if flotation is used for chromite processing at all. Can anyone name any producing plants where flotation is used from chromite/chromite slimes?

We have just done a test recently using column flotation and it works.

Since I posted this question, I have uncovered a lot of new information on this topic.  The best analogue is likely this one: https://www.saimm.co.za/Conferences/Pt2004/151_Martinovic.pdf  The chromite was floating accidentally and they were trying to suppress it.  Activator was CuSO4 and the collector was SIBX.
