THE CONTENT OF MY MERCURY (1 reply)

Being a gold prospector for years, I have used small amounts of mercury to recover the fine pieces. A buddy found a large vial of mercury and gave it to me, but it's not shiny clean. The vial seems heavy, even including the water/mercury ratio. It seems to have a gold hue to it and not sure of it's contents. Should I burn off a small amount of it or should I have it tested? What would be the most practical and inexpensive route?

Tom,

Mercury is tough as no one wants to test it anymore due to the environmental issues.  Its color could be any number of contaminants.  Burning off a small portion is going to be pretty dangerous as the fume is very toxic.  If you do want to know what is in there I suggest using a retort where the mercury is condensed and recovered. You can build one pretty easily and buy them as well.

Safer for everyone and you can distill the whole amount and see what you have left.  Please be careful and dispose of the mercury properly when done.
