Separate Sand and Clay with hydrocyclones (3 replies)

Hello. I am working in a sand washing plant In India. We are using hydrocyclones to separate sand & clay. But these hydrocyclones are not performing well. We are using Stubby hydrocyclones so more amount of sand is sending to the overflow.We have increased the cyclone length but still now also sand is coming in the overflow.So we are planning to change part of the cyclone into conical shape. Will this try help us?

  • Body diameter - 400 mm
  • operating pressure - 0.9 to 1 bar
  • Vortex - 150 mm
  • Spigot - 85 mm
  • % solids - 50% w/w (30% v/v)

Right now we are using this type of hydrocyclone(image is attached).So sand is coming more in the overflow. So we are planning to change this stubborn hydrocyclones to conventional hydrocyclones. Is it possible to modify the exiting cyclones?

I'd say a 150 mm Vortex in a 400 mm cyclone is too large.  Your Vortex/Apex ratio is OK but the Vortex seems to big to me in relations to the cyclone body size.

You may find a 4" Vortex and a 2" Apex are more appropriate for your task.

PS: Watch for the lower capacity after you install smaller Vortex/Apex.

I just noted your Overflow pipes are directly connected to the take-away pipe.  This risk to create a syphon from the inner cyclone content directly to the O/F.  Look at the imaginary green pipe I added to your photos.  It acts as a 25 to 50 mm ventilation pipe.
