Non-water fluid cyclone selection and sizing method (1 reply)

I need help with the size and selection of non-water cyclone(s) i can install to produce 45 t/h, 90%<90 µm grinding product (ball mill product is 80%<90 µm) for bauxite refining Bayer process. The fluid phase is hot caustic so the Richard Arterburn sizing method is not valid in this application. In the case of water fluid a 90.12 cm hydrocyclone should have been selected using Richard Arterburn sizing method. What if the fluid phase is caustic? The following are the cyclone feed parameters:

Liquid-> Caustic - SG: 1.25 g/cm3 - Temperature: 80 c

Solid-> Bauxite - SG: 3.2 g/cm3

Feed-> Solid flowrate: 49.5 t/h (15.41 m3/h) - Slurry flowrate: 193 t/h (126.57 m3/h) - Percent solid : 25.65% w/w & 12.18% v/v (There are some limitations in cyclone feed percent solid due to the digestion required caustic)

Pressure drop: 50 kPa

Circulating load: 10%

Desired overflow: 90%<90 µm

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

In order to size cyclones, it is important to use the correct correction factors. It should be pointed out that correction factors are a relative measure of slurry
viscosity and is affected by such things as the size of particles present as well as
particle shape. I think you should determine your fluid viscosity and try to get a correlation with the percent solids.
