What is the purpose of bleed streams in hydromet circuit like leach, solvent extraction etc?

In any circuit where there is a large amount of recirculation material builds up, whether it is fines/slimes solids or breakdown products from the chemicals (flotation, lixivants, etc.).  These degrade the overall performance, some times significantly.  Having a bleed from the circuit allows the removal of these products.

The trick is to size the bleed so that just enough is removed to prevent major buildup, yet not too much to waste good material.
