Gold recovery on disuse activated carbon (3 replies and 3 comments)

Hello folks,

I work in a ADR plant (heap leaching) over the years we have stock fine particles of activated carbon, actually in disuse.

We will like to know what technologies can be applied in order to recover the residual gold in carbon, the gold grade is 0.05 gAu/Kg of carbon.

Will it work if we grind the carbon ( #200 mesh) and pass it again to desorption?

We will be very happy if we can recover +50% of the gold.

Thanks in advance !

Hi Hans

That level of gold is relatively low in terms of carbon used for gold extraction (50 ppm). This tends to be the base level of carbon after stripping and it would take quite an expensive intensive strip to get it lower. Grinding wont work as gold is absorbed onto the carbon. It also depends on how much of it you have. There are people who buy this fine carbon and selling it may be the easiest way forwards. If you wish to treat it yourself and depending upon quantitiy, buring it and then leaching the ashes may be the way to go.

I agree that grinding won't help in recovery of the gold. Metals Research in Twin Falls, Idaho is a company that recovers gold from safety carbon. You could contact them for their thoughts on what you might be able to recovery through them. There are other recyclers out there also. Burning the carbon in a controlled system (so you don't lose fine particulates) and leaching the ash is most likely your best local bet for recovery of the gold.

It is interesting that activated carbon has a higher gold content to justify the final treatment that has a cost.

The desorpsion and cleaning of the activated carbon generates fine material that can be recovered in sedimentation ponds. This material can have 0.2 grs / kg.

KCA has a system to do this

Otherwise I would find a recycler, toll treatment smelter or similar to buy it.  They will take a portion of the gold as payment.

Hi Hans...have you tried to gasify the carbon and then do a smelting to ashes?...we are doing something similar in Indonesia for artisanal miners.

How much fine carbon do you have?....if interested you can contact me https://www.911metallurgist.com/profile/saguero/
