I am looking up Sulfur standards for ICP-OES and most of the standards offered are prepared in a water matrix. I have only ever seen standards prepared in what's usually a 2-5% acidic matrix. The sulfur standard we currently have at my job site is an older standard, but it was prepared with ammonium sulfate in a 5% nitric acid matrix. I am curious why most of the Sulfur standards offered are prepared in a water matrix? Does this have to do with sulfur being reactive with concentrated nitric acid?

A friend in the business told me:

S is stable in water. The ICP-OES single-element standards most use are in a wide variety of concentrations of HNO3, HCl, a combination of the 2 or water.

My S single-element standard solution is in a water matrix.

So long as you are sourcing from an accredited manufacture like isoSPEC (which you can order through Delta Scientific) or the likes, you shouldn’t have to worry.

You should ask to see the certificate for the standard before you purchase it and ask for any accreditation details the manufacturer has. Your sales reps will be able to provide an answer to any questions.
