Belt conveyors used to transport minerals are to be found all around the world in a large number of surface and underground mining operations. The idea of using the conveyor belt is not new, indeed, the first bell conveyors were introduced at the end of the nineteenth century; the basic principles of operation have not changed. However, over the years the capacity rating of belt systems and the length over which material can be transported have increased very considerably, together with the power inputs, the size of components and the degree of sophistication. The ‘Rules of Thumb’ set out by McIntosh Engineering underline the advantage of belt conveying across the spectrum of operations. They state:
- An underground mine is more economically served by a belt conveyor than railcars or trucks when the daily mine production exceeds 5000 tons.
- As a rule, belt conveyor operation is more economical than truck haulage if the conveying distance exceeds I km
- A further attempt to provide guidelines for the selection of forms of haulage on cost grounds can be found in the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) publication. CEMA agrees with the second bullet point above and adds four other economic points.
- Beyond 1 km distance, the ton-mile cost of transport by belt conveyor may be as low as 1/10th cost by haul truck.
- Estimated operating maintenance cost per year for a belt conveyor is 2% of the purchase cost plus 5% of the belt cost.
- Belt replacement is on average every 5 years for hard rock applications and up to 15 years for non-abrasive applications.
- Well maintained conveyor systems can reliably operate at 90% or higher availability.
High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) have struggled for acceptance into the hard-rock mining sector. CRITICAL HPGR PARAMETERS HPGR roll diameters typically range from 0.5 m to 2.8 m, depending on the supplies, and roll widths vary from 0.2 m to 1.8 m. The aspect ratio of the rolls also varies as a function of manufacturer. Typical HPGR throughput rates range from 20 to 3,000 tph, with installed motor power as high as 3,000 kW per roll. The roll surface is protected with wear-resistant materials, and it has been these that have traditionally stymied HPGR acceptance, but solutions are now in place. When operating an HPGR, the two most important operating parameters are

Industrial Rock Crushers employ two planer crushing surfaces set at a small angle to each other and convergent downward. One plane is fixed and the other is pivoted either top or bottom allowing a reciprocating motion when pushed by a pitman-toggle arrangement activated by an eccentric drive. Blakefeatures a double toggle jaw crusher drive mechanism which gives relatively smaller movement at the receiving end of the chamber generating a powerful crushing action for large rock pieces. A refinement on the crusher illustrated is the use of a curved jaw plate on the swing jaw which renders the crusher non-choking. This curvature decreases the effective receiving opening but does prevent choking and thereby increased capacity. A high-capacity Blake has subsequently been manufactured which has a decreased crushing angle and several altered structural design details. This type of crusher is now more commonly installed unless the prime objective is to have a maximum receiving opening for hard and coarse feed. The single toggle jaw crusher is similar to the Dodgetype in that maximum movement is at the receiving opening but in all other respects compares with the Blake type. The actual crushing motion is somewhat complicated consisting of vertical as well as horizontal components. The machine is popular for its simplicity, light weight, moderate cost and ease of adjustment as well as its high capacity and high reduction ratio. It is particularly applicable for portable crushing rigs. Its disadvantages are high wear of jaw plates due to the vertical component of movement and its vulnerability to bearing damage due to shock loading.

For finer crushing or reduction a Symons cone crusher the the norm. Symons are commonly used for secondary, tertiary or quaternary crushing. They do this by a different chamber design which is flatter and by operating at about twice the rotational speed of a primary-type gyratory crusher. One of the first cone crushers had a direct drive vertical motor mounted above the spider with the drive shaft passing through the hollow bored main shaft. With relatively high speeds of 480 to 580 rpm and small eccentric throw the machine produced a uniform produce with minimum fines. There are numerous Symons cone crusher manufacturers of modern crushers each promoting some unique aspect. The Allis Chalmers Hydrocone' selling point is its adjustability and tramp protection through a hydraulic support system for the headcentre. By merely adjusting the oil reservoir below the head centre the crusher setting can be changed while in full operation. Tramp metal causes a surge of pressure in this hydraulic system which is absorbed through relief valves and gas-bladder filled accumulator bottles which allow the headcentre to momentarily drop and return to its normal operating position when the tramp has fallen through. The Symons or Rexnord spring cone crusher is adjusted by spinning the bowl up or down manually or through hydraulic rams. A series of powerful springs give the necessary tramp protection. Several other manufacturers produce similar types and sizes of crushers but all follow the basic types described.
Vibratory feeders are used in gravimetric feeding systems to handle solids with particles that are loo large to be handled by screw, rotary-vane, or vertical-gate feeders, or in operations where the physical characteristics of the solid particles would be adversely affected by passage through these volumetric feeding devices. The discharge flow pattern of a vibrating feeder is extremely smooth and thus is ideal for continuous weighing in solids flow metering applications. The vibratory feeder consists of a feed chute (which may be an open pan or closed tube) that is moved back and forth by the oscillating armature of an electromagnetic driver. The flow rate of the solids can be controlled by adjusting the current input into the electromagnetic driver of the feeder. This input controls the pull of the electromagnet and the length of its stroke. Vibratory feeders are well suited for remote computer control in integrated material-handling systems. The vibratory feed chute can be jacketed for heating or cooling, and the tubular chutes can be made dust tight by flexible connections at both ends. The vibratory feeders can resist flooding (liquid-like flow) and are available for capacity ranges from ounces to tons per hour.
