Despite improvements in metallurgical processes that have been made over the years, the reality is that unit operations, machines, and often called «black boxes» have not evolved or changed much. The ore is reduced in size, chemicals and separate and concentrated minerals are added to produce a marketable product. Much of this process is mechanical and generally mistaken for dark alchemy. Each mineral processing plant is different: with various types of minerals, equipment and mode of operation. The evaluation and prioritization of variables that affect plant performance is the primary function. Implementing changes within the constraints imposed can be difficult, since resources can be limited.

Inevitably, the ability to solve problems can be confusing due to the large number of variables that can affect processes. In most cases, the problems are not metallurgical in nature but operational and mechanical. It is a problem solving process and in many of the operations this ability is absent. Too often many changes have been made together without a solution being in the greatest confusion. Most plants learn to live and survive their problems, not to solve them.
