Metso 54x74 Mk1 crusher at a Cu mine in BC

When the concaves got worn this crusher started packing, leading to high motor amps and motor overheating.

What is the mechanism of packing? Why does it occur?

The most common cause of packing is an increase in clay/soft feed, with a crusher volume increase due to the wear and a soft orethis can lead to build up on the surfaces, especially if there are grooves or cracks.  Once started the build up can increase quickly.

Solution being to shorten the time between replacement or using air or water to fluch the crusher.
