Hello everyone, I was given the responsibility of testing the cyclone efficiency of the process plant. Our current operation required percentage should be 80% passing the 75um screen.

What should I do as a Metallurgical Laboratory Technician to meet the required percentage with performing milling of the samples which is not a method of doing particles size distribution?

My question is: what can i do in a spreadsheet to get the %passing formula?

You mention 2 issues here:

  1. determining cyclone efficiency
  2. producing 80% passing 74 microns (200 mesh)

Certainly the 2 are interrelated but what is expectation for you? Are you expected to optimize the grinding circuit?

can it be demonstrated as it is said? on entering the screening result on the spread sheet?

You re-create this formula on spread sheet . and you can get the separation efficiency of hydro-cyclone .

what are the hydrocyclone overflow,underflow and feed? are they in terms of size mass or what?

If you don't want to do full PSDs you can do a quick check as follows:

  1. Take Marcy bucket sample and determine slurry SG
  2. Run sample over 75mic screen, wash thoroughly so no undersize is retained on the screen deck
  3. Wash +75mic fraction into Marcy bucket, fill bucket up and determine slurry SG
  4. From the difference you can calculate %passing 75 micron
