SAND WASHING - SILICA SAND (4 replies)

Hello All! I am a newbie in this silica sand and washing things. I have a few very basic questions below. I hope all the experts in this forum can help me out.

  1. What does it mean when somebody is asking for Silica Sand with 99.5% SiO2?
  2. What is the typical SiO2 content for Sea Sand and River Sand?
  3. Will sand washing increase the SiO2 content? For example, if you have the original sand containing of 90% SiO2, will washing the sand increase the SiO2 pecentage?
  4. What are the processes involved in sand washing to have high percentage of SiO2?

The above are just a few basic questions for now. I hope you can help me out. Sorry if my questions are a bit haphazard now...At this point, my knowledge in this thing is still blurry.

Thanks and best regards,

Hi everyone.

I'm very interesting in this process.

I'm using Spiral Classifier and Vibrating Grizzly Feeders but it's ineffective. I can't separate felspar in silica sand.

I hope all the experts in this forum can help me out.

Thanks and best regards,

Hi, I am in smelting industry for years and using silica sand and lumpy all along. I would like to share with you.

What does it mean when somebody is asking for Silica Sand with 99.5% SiO2?

High purity of silica sand is used for casting or in foundry. The color should be white and a little yellow.

What is the typical SiO2 content for Sea Sand and River Sand?

It depends. After washing, some river sand will have at least 97% of SiO2. But in sea sand, the MgO would be higher.

Will sand washing increase the SiO2 content?

sand washing is for removing mud which contains Al2O3. The customer prefers and only like even size of sand.

For example, if you have the original sand containing of 90% SiO2, will washing the sand increase the SiO2 pecentage?

If it contains mud and you can remove it, it will increased.

What are the processes involved in sand washing to have high percentage of SiO2?

     Jigging.

Hope it helps.

Hi Aldeenor

I will try my best to answer your questions and thanks for seeking help, it is a strong point but still that is not the answer to your question

1. Silica sand with 99.5% simply means that if you take 100 grams from the bulk of that sand 99.5 grams must be SiO2.Similarly if you take 1000 grams of the same sand, 995 grams must be SiO2.This also means that 0.5 % will be unwanted material, 99.5 % is fairly high purity. You may also have 99.9 % SiO2 depending on the process used for beneficiation and this might be an ideal concept in the reality of process engineering.

2. I am not sure but this will be left for those better positioned to answer the question.

3. Yes, sand washing will really increase SiO2 content and your starting SiO2 content is already good so you might even go to 97 % SiO2.You must just get appropriate process and people with excellent operational and technical skills.

4. You might as well make use of the spiral plant, there are a lot of companies that supply these equipment, install and commission. You only tell them your specification, for instance 99.5 % SiO2 final and starting with 90 % SiO2.
